Chiefs Star Left At Home, From ‘One Of The Best’ To Left To Rest
Not so long ago Ernst Middendorp was calling Hendrick Ekstein ‘one of the best’ he’d ever worked with, but now – for the second consecutive game – he’s been left out of the squad.
The 28-year-old has played 17 Absa Premiership games so far this season – four away from making it his busiest campaign to date – but the Siya crew has been informed that the midfield man will not be making his 18th appearance in the encounter with SuperSport United.
There could be suspicions that Ekstein’s absence could be in relation to his contractual situation, with the player’s future having been thrown into question given the fact that his current deal will expire at the end of the current season and – at the time of writing – there has been no official word about his future.
This weekend’s game will mark the first time this season that ‘Pule’ has been left out of the squad completely for two games in a row, and it will no doubt be disappointing for the midfielder given his coach’s recent praise of him.
It is thought that Ekstein isn’t injured, having trained all week, though his absence could also just be a tactical decision from Middendorp based on the opposition, and not necessarily to do with his contract wranglings.
Chiefs face SuperSport at Mbombela Stadium tomorrow evening.
