Kaizer Chiefs are flying high atop the Absa Premiership table, and they’re hitting their best form in years under Ernst Middendorp – especially when it comes to their defence…
It’s now over 400 minutes league minutes since the Glamour Boys last conceded a goal, and they’ve got themselves four consecutive clean sheets for the first time in over three years.
Middendorp’s side have gone 434 minutes without conceding since Jabu Maluleke’s penalty saw them succumb to their first league defeat last month, and their defensive form is the best they have produced since going six games without conceding back in 2016.
Meanwhile, the club has now won four Absa Premiership games in a row for the first time since 2017, and their 2-0 victory at Loftus Versfeld not only ended Mamelodi Sundowns’ five-game winning streak in all competitions, but also sent them five points clear at the top of the league.
On a personal level for Middendorp, the German ended Pitso Mosimane’s dominance over him as he picked up his first win against the former Bafana Bafana coach since the 2006 Supa 8 final, and has gone some way to silencing his critics as the Glamour Boys keep up their title challenge.
Next up for Chiefs is a massive Telkom Knockout quarter-final against Orlando Pirates as the Glamour Boys look to book their spot in the final four of the tournament, and they will be eager to avenge last year’s defeat in the same competition as they look to try and end their long trophy drought before 2019 comes to an end.
