The Kenyan international has been Chiefs’ only signing of the January transfer window so far after he came to replace the departing James Kotei, and fans will have been hoping to get a first glimpse of his abilities this month as they continue their pursuit of the title.
It looks like they will have to wait until next month though, with the midfield man thought to be carrying a bit of an injury that means he will not be able to feature against Golden Arrows this weekend – even if he has gotten his South African work permit in time.
For that reason, Akumu is not expected to make the trip to Durban when they travel to KwaZulu-Natal today, however it could set up a perfect debut against Royal Eagles in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 early in February.
The 27-year-old becomes the fifth registered foreigner at the club alongside Daniel Akpeyi, Leonardo Castro, Lazarous Kambole and Samir Nurkovic, and Ernst Middendorp will be desperate for him to add more to the team that the debut-less Kotei did.

It remains to be seen exactly how long Akumu will need before being fully available for selection, but Chiefs do have a two-week break after this weekend before facing Eagles – a break that could give the former ZESCO United man chance to force his way into Middendorp’s plans.
