Why Chiefs Boss Was ‘Particularly Happy’…
Kaizer Chiefs came back from behind to get three points against Highlands Park at the weekend, and Ernst Middendorp said he was ‘particularly happy’ with three players.
The German handed debuts to Samir Nurkovic, Kearyn Baccus and Lazarous Kambole in Makhulong as the Glamour Boys’ 2019/20 season got underway, with Nurkovic and Baccus each contributing an assist in their 3-2 win in Tembisa.
Lebogang Manyama, meanwhile, scored his first Absa Premiership goal since May 2017, and Erick Mathoho was on target in a league game for the first time since August of the same year – with the duo’s return proving to be timely for the German coach as he looks forward to the season ahead.
Chiefs are now preparing themselves to face Black Leopards at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening, and Middendorp says they were ‘completely a different team’ at the weekend.
Speaking to the club’s official website, he said, “We played with several players that we missed last season. Manyama and Mathoho both scored, and if you recall, these are some of the players that were affected by an assortment of injuries last season. Furthermore, if you check the introduction of the new players, it shows that we were completely a different team today.
“We still had Happy Mashiane, George Maluleka and Ramahlwe Mphahlele starting from the bench. I am particularly happy with the debutants, they all showed glimpses of what we should expect as soon as they gel and get to know each other very well.”
Chiefs face Leopards in Durban on Saturday at 20h15.
