It’s decision time for Ernst Middendorp as he considers who to start in place of Itumeleng Khune for this weekend’s bumper Telkom Knockout encounter…
The Glamour Boys have used three different goalkeepers over the course of the season so far despite their only being eight games played, and with Khune sustaining a new injury it is up to the others to step up once again.
Middendorp started the season with Bruce Bvuma as his first choice after he returned from action at the African Cup of Nations with Bafana, however then it was Daniel Akpeyi who took his place prior to Khune’s return from shoulder surgery.
Bvuma has sustained a knock of his own, but is now fully fit again and will be itching to get his place back from Akpeyi now that Amakhosi’s number one is back out of contention once more.
Chiefs do have Bontle Molefe and Sanele Tshabalala also training with the first team as goalkeeper coach, Lee Baxter, puts them through their paces, however the young duo is unlikely to be in the running for a starting berth against Cape Town City.
Both Bvuma and Akpeyi featured over the weekend in the Shell Helix Ultra Cup and Macufe Cup respectively, and Middendorp will no doubt have been assessing their performances in order to make an educated decision for the crucial encounter in Cape Town on Saturday afternoon.
