Modest Middendorp Heaps Praise On Pitso & Sundowns

It was his team that picked up all three points this past weekend, but Kaizer Chiefs’ Ernst Middendorp was full of praise for Pitso Mosimane and his Mamelodi Sundowns side.

The Glamour Boys ran out 2-0 winners at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday, with Samir Nurkovic grabbing a brace to lead them five points clear at the summit of the Absa Premiership table.

Middendorp and Mosimane have been at odds in recent weeks in the build-up to the top-of-the-table clash, but the Amakhosi coach clearly believes in being modest in victory, and also had a special mention for the club’s faithful supporters that turned out in numbers.

Speaking to Chiefs’ official website, Middendorp said, “We should have done better to have a comfortable lead in the first half… We played a good team with quality players. They have also a good and a qualified coach in Pitso Mosimane. We had to go to them well prepared. Credit to everyone, not forgetting the supporters – they really gave us ‘the extra man.’

“We tried hard to and did well to manage the game. We are very happy especially with an incremental step we are on. The win itself is just a three-pointer. We know there is still a long way to go.

“It is ok, we will move on and prepare for the next game… Happiness is an enemy of progress in football. So, we will not get carried away. Next week we have three back to back games. We have to focus and do our homework properly.”

The German went on to add that he’s pleased to remain on top of the league table, saying, “Beating Sundowns in their backyard is good for the motivation of the team. We were clinical in the box and used our opportunities. We were more clinical than Sundowns. I am happy with the three points and maintaining the position on top of the log.”

Next up for Chiefs is a big Soweto Derby clash with Orlando Pirates as they look to progress in the Telkom Knockout.
