Why Middendorp Was Impressed Despite Chiefs’ Draw

Ernst Middendorp has some positive words to say about Kaizer Chiefs, despite the 1-1 draw with Black Leopards and remaining seventh in the Absa Premiership.

The Glamour Boys took the lead on Saturday afternoon as they looked to get back to winning ways after their recent loss to Baroka FC, however, it wasn’t to be in Thohoyandou as the hosts peg them back to share the spoils at the end of the game.

Middendorp made a whole host of changes as the likes of Khama Billiat returned and Reeve Frosler was handed his debut, and he admits that several of his fringe players may be in line to start again following their performance.

“With a little more sharpness in front of the goal, we would have been telling a different story… However, compared to last week’s game against Baroka, the attitude was great – the fighting spirit was there.

“We dominated in terms of goalscoring opportunities. We should have had the lead going into the half-time break, although I can live with the outcome because we can take a lot of positives out of this match going forward. Several players raised their hands in terms of selection.

“We came to get a win, but Leopards were also hungry to get the points.”

Meanwhile, with one eye looking forward on the Nedbank Cup semi-final this weekend, Middendorp added, “This Leopards match has no link with the next one, the plan for the Chippa game will only kick in after we have reviewed the Leopards clash. That’s when we will refocus our attention to fight for a place in the Nedbank Cup final.”

A number of players were rested for the Lidoda Duvha encounter, meaning that they now have no suspension worries for the semi-final against Chippa United.
