Chiefs Man Heads To AFCON Among Global Superstars?

Kaizer Chiefs haven’t had much success in their 2018/19 season so far, but at least one of their stars will be gunning for glory after his selection for the African Cup of Nations.
Daniel Akpeyi has not really set the world alight since joining the Glamour Boys back in January, with young Bruce Bvuma often being preferred over the veteran Nigerian stopper.
The 32-year-old will not get to play this weekend either when Chiefs go into battle in the Nedbank Cup final with TS Galaxy due to him being cup-tied, but it certainly seems as though the season is not over for the former Chippa United man.
Akpeyi has been named alongside Francis Uzoho and Ikechukwu Ezenwa in Gernot Rohr’s provisional side for the upcoming AFCON, and will be hoping to make sure that he ties down his place in the final squad that makes the trip to Egypt for the finals.

With other Amakhosi players – most notably with Bafana Bafana and Zimbabwe – also likely to be on the plane to North Africa, the club will be eager for them to gain plenty of international experience that they can then bring back to impart on their others players for the 2019/20 campaign.
Akpeyi has played six Absa Premiership games for Chiefs in 2019, most recently against his former club, Chippa, as they were beaten 1-0 on the final day of the season.
