Ernst Middendorp is a coach known for his faith in youth, and last season saw the emergence of players such as Happy Mashiane and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo as he sought to freshen up the ranks at the club to combat their aging squad.
Now, with the team sitting on top of the Absa Premiership table, the German has got a number of players in his first team squad who are aged 22 or younger, and they will be looking to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya as they seek to make a name for themselves in the gold and black.
Mashiane is back fit again after a serious injury, while young Reeve Frosler has been almost ever-present in his first full season with the club. Players such as Njabulo Blom, Bontle Molefe and Sizwe Twala are all now part of the first team for the 2019/20 campaign, and Middendorp is believed to be impressed with 16-year-old Keletso Sifama, who stepped up into the senior ranks for a couple of friendlies in the international break.
Another player who will be looking to kick on, Ngcobo, is expected back in the not-so-distant future after his horror Achilles injury last season, and the highly-rated teenager may get his chance to shine under Middendorp’s tutelage this season.
