Kaizer Chiefs once shelled out a record transfer fee to land a star midfielder from Moroka Swallows, and the trophy haul that followed suggested that it was good business…
When the Glamour Boys shelled out around R45,000 to Moroka Swallows for Johannes Fetsi ‘Chippa’ Molatedi back in 1984, they set a new South African transfer record, Kaizer Motaung will have known that he’d have to hit the ground running – and he did that by scoring his first goal to help his new side knock Orlando Pirates out of the John Player Special Knockout on the way to winning it.
In fact, that year Chiefs won the National Professional Soccer League, Mainstay Cup and Sales House Cup as well as clinching the JPS under Joe Frickleton, with Molatedi going on to score over 50 goals for the Glamour Boys during his time there.
Speaking to Chiefs’ official website back in 2012 about when his R45k move was sealed, the midfield man said, “Kaizer Chiefs first made contact with me back in 1982 when I was still with Moroka Swallows… Bra Sam Motaung came to my house and spoke to me about joining the Club. I was excited when it finally happened in 1984.

“I am forever grateful to Executive Chairman, Kaizer Motaung, for the confidence he showed in me. He paid a record fee. I could not wait to don the gold and black immediately after signing my contract. The contract with Chiefs was the first contract I had ever signed as I played at Swallows without a contract. It is the professionalism at Chiefs that make the Club shoulders above the rest.
“I was not under pressure to perform because of the transfer fee that Kaizer Chiefs paid. I always wanted to do my best and when I was a player I always wanted to perform to the best of my ability. Even today I put myself to look good in everything that I do.”
