Kaizer Chiefs aren’t just doing well in the defensive department this season, and could be on track for their best goalscoring season in more than a decade!
The Glamour Boys are seven points clear at the top of the Absa Premiership table after 21 games, and have already bettered their record for last season in terms of points, goals scored and wins achieved – putting them in a prime position to win the Absa Premiership and end their long trophy drought.
Chiefs are currently enduring their longest streak without a trophy in their 50-year history having last lifted a piece of silverware in May 2015, but that could all end in a couple of months as Ernst Middendorp steers them towards the league title.
With 40 goals in 21 games, Amakhosi are on track to record their best scoring season since they won the league in 2014/15 under Stuart Baxter (41 goals), and could even beat their best tally in recent years from Baxter’s opening campaign in 2012/13 when they scored 48 times.
Chiefs’ goal tally -
2019/20 (so far): 40
It seems unlikely, however, that Middendorp’s men will be able to match the feat of Ted Dumitru’s Amakhosi from 2004/05 (their highest in recent memory) when they bagged a whopping 55 goals to clinch the title in rip-roaring style with a goal difference of +29.
While it’s been very much a team effort in the goalscoring department this season, Chiefs - the league's top scorers so far, do have new signing, Samir Nurkovic, to thank for more than quarter of their goals, with the Serbian having become the first Chiefs player to reach double figures in a league campaign since Bernard Parker in 2013/14.
