'Chiefs Not Renewing My Contract Didn’t Come As A Surprise'

In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma this week, a now former Kaizer Chiefs player opened up about why it didn’t come as a surprise when the club did not renew his contract.

Chiefs announced on June 30 that they will not be extending the contracts of Kabelo Mahlasela and Joseph Molangoane, while George Maluleka’s exit from Naturena was also confirmed on the day.

Molangoane joined the Soweto giants in December 2016, though had been out of action for long periods of time due to serious injuries.

After extending his contract by another year in May 2019, the 32-year-old made no appearances for Chiefs during the current 2019/20 campaign and Amakhosi decided against renewing his contract at the end of June, despite making a successful recovery from injury.

Speaking in issue number 1181 of Soccer Laduma, the player opened up about why it did not come as a surprise to him when the club did not extend his contract.

“Err... it didn’t come as a surprise because I understand that they’re running a business and I’ve been in the team for a year and-a-half ngingadlali (without playing). Nakubo (Even to them), surely this is something they looked into and decided against renewing my contract. I understand that, fully, and it was not too much of a surprise (when the contract wasn’t renewed) because I wasn’t playing,” the player told Soccer Laduma.

“Obviously when you’re not playing, this happens to you before anyone else and the team will be looking ukuthola abanye abantu (to get other people) who will give the team something. Do you understand? It had to happen, at some stage, and that’s why I said I wasn’t too surprised. Either last week or in two years’ time, it was bound to happen at the end of the day. I always had it at the back of my mind because I knew it was just a matter of time…” he added.

The player also discussed:

  • His search for a new club
  • The lessons he learnt through his injuries
  • His message to the fans who are not happy to see him leave Naturena.
