Chiefs Give Khune Update, Another Blow
Kaizer Chiefs have given an official update on the situation of club captain, Itumeleng Khune, with the shot-stopper being handed another blow on the injury front…
The Amakhosi’s number one made his long-awaited comeback for the club last month as he kept a cleansheet against AmaZulu in his first appearance of 2019, but was then substituted just 28 minutes into his second game – against Baroka – after picking up another knock.
It has now been confirmed that Khune is unlikely to play again at all this month as he looks to make a return once again after his latest setback, with Daniel Akpeyi likely to deputise in his place when they return to competitive action in the Telkom Knockout against Cape Town City next weekend.
The club confirmed on their official website that they ‘will be without Itumeleng Khune who’s out with a groin injury’, while Middendorp gave some insight into how long he faces on the sidelines with his latest ailment, saying, “Khune is sidelined for the month.”
Prior to today’s Shell Helix Ultra Cup encounter with Mamelodi Sundowns, he did add, however, “We have four internationals doing duty for South Africa and Zambia. What’s important though is that will have all positions covered and hope we will use this to assess some combinations, especial at the back row.”
The two sides will get underway at FNB Stadium shortly, but Khune will be forced to watch from the stands once again as the 32-year-old deals with yet another injury problem.
