Remembering Senzo – An Emotional Khune Speaks

Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, has shared the fond memories of his late friend, the former Orlando Pirates and South African senior national team goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

With Bafana in Durban for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sao Tome on Friday, the team gathered at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday afternoon for the tombstone unveiling of the ex-national team captain.

Speaking on behalf Bafana players, Khune has spoken of how his friendship with Meyiwa started at a young age until they played for Chiefs and Pirates respectively, as well as Bafana.

“Senzo and I came from far, competing to become some of the best goalkeepers in the country. We grew up looking up to our role models. From Kaizer Chiefs, I grew up looking up to Brian Baloyi, and from the Orlando Pirates academy (Senzo) looked up to Williams Okpara. We told ourselves at a very young age that, I think when we first met we were 15, we wanted to take over as national team goalkeepers. We wanted to be in the derby, one of the best derbies in the world, which is Kaizer Chiefs versus Orlando Pirates. We had bigger dreams while we were still young that we would be number ones at our respective clubs and to battle it out in the national team for the number one jersey,” said Khune.

“I was promoted first (to the Chiefs first team) and I think Senzo was promoted two months after me to the Orlando Pirates first team. He came to celebrate with me after I got promoted and he brought me Streetwise Two because we loved food shame. He brought me Streetwise Two from KFC and said, ‘Congratulations my friend, you have achieved the goal that you always wanted to achieve’ added Khune.

Khune says he also bought the late star a Streetwise Two after he was also promoted at the Buccaneers.

“Everything that we dreamt of, we ended up ticking the boxes and losing him was heart-breaking. May his soul rest in peace. We will miss you Senzo, we will always miss you my friend, rest in peace and I hope we will get justice very soon,” he said.

Meyiwa was gunned down on 26 October in a house in Vosloorus and up to this day no one has been sentenced for his senseless killing.
