Tower Talks Chiefs, Injury & The Amakhosi Faithful
Kaizer Chiefs’ 2019/20 Absa Premiership campaign gets underway tomorrow, and Erick Mathoho will be hoping that this season is the one where he gets back to his best…
Injury meant that the centre back made just four league appearances for the Glamour Boys throughout the course of their 2018/19 campaign, with surgery seeing him return to action in May after spending the first half of the season out of favour.
It remains to be seen whether Ernst Middendorp, who brought Mathoho back into his squad in May, will give him a starting berth against Highlands Park in Makhulong, but the Bafana Bafana international will be hoping to make his mark if he is given the nod.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the defender spoke of the campaign ahead, saying, “I feel very good and strong – it’s all thanks to the training that helped with getting back to full fitness after the long injury I had last season. I am now fully fit and raring to give it my best…
“The break at the end of the season and starting pre-season with the team helped me a great deal. I’m now ready to for the season, starting with the game on Sunday.
With the new season now finally getting underway again, ‘Tower’ says that the players have to ‘step up’ against the Lions of the North tomorrow afternoon, adding, “We have been working tirelessly and helping each other as players. We will ensure that we make the supporters happy by doing well early in the season. They have bought their tickets in numbers for Sunday, meaning that they are hungry for football, so we have to step up to the plate and repay their faith with good results.
“There is no easy game for us because all fifteen teams want to beat Chiefs. We know what to expect on Sunday and the fighting spirit I saw in our team gives me hope that we are battle-ready. Amakhosi supporters can expect a thrilling game.”
Chiefs take on Highlands at 15h00 tomorrow afternoon.
