Hunt: It’s More Of A Disadvantage

With mass gatherings still banned, Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt has discussed what impact the absence of fans at the stadiums has on his team.

The serial winning coach has not been able to lead his squad in front of the Amakhosi faithful since he was appointed at Naturena because of the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions under the Disaster Management Act.

Hunt has been in charge of five matches so far, winning two, drawing one and losing two to the club’s biggest rivals – Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

“I think it is more of a disadvantage, you could see it from last season already,” said Hunt when asked about not having supporters at the venues.

“The fans could have helped them get over the line last season (Chiefs missed out on winning the title in the final 20 minutes of the campaign). I can feel it from the players that they do miss the supporters behind them.”

Asked if their absence can allow him to work his way to getting better results without the demanding fans, Hunt said he preferred their presence.

“I don’t think it’s a two-way thing, pressure makes you do a little bit more. The big clubs do suffer without the crowds because of what is going on. For me, it’s a big loss not having the supporters,” Hunt told journalists.

Chiefs host Pirates – behind closed doors, on Sunday in the second leg of their MTN8 tie and need to overturn a 3-0 deficit.
