Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt has explained some of the decisions he made in their much-needed win over AmaZulu on Wednesday.
Samir Nurkovic netted the only goal of the game in his first start of the season, inspiring the Soweto giants to only their second league victory in 10 matches. The victory moved Amakhosi up from 14th to 10th place on the DSTV Premiership.
Without injured Khama Billiat and Leonardo Castro, Hunt gave Nurkovic his first start, while Daniel Cardoso was played in a different role on the day. Hunt explained his decisions on the day and praised his side for how well they defended as they held on for the narrow win.
“We worked on the shape before we came here, to try nullify them a bit. They’ve got some good players. They’ve invested in their team heavily upfront and I knew their wide players are dangerous. But that’s how you are supposed to defend. I thought in the first half they got behind us only once, twice maybe, but we had some good chance. I thought Samir was fantastic. I did not want to play him, but we’ve only got one striker available, so it’s a problem,” Hunt said after the game.
“Right now any win for us is a big win. We should have won a few more games. The table does not lie. We’ve been poor defensively. But as I said from the start, if you get a guy like Samir playing in your team every week…it’s like what happened last year. He played the first 10 games, and he scored all your goals. He got half a chance, and we haven’t had that.
“I thought it was a much better, determined performance. I thought Daniel Cardoso (did well). People think I am mad, but we don’t have anybody else. I worked on him a bit this week to play in midfield and he was brilliant.”
Amakhosi are away to Cape Town City on Saturday, January 16.
