Kaizer Chiefs were dumped out of the Nedbank Cup by their GladAfrica Championship counterparts Richards Bay on Sunday. We take a look at how the two sides compare in market values.
It was a typical case of ‘David vs Goliath’ at the FNB Stadium on Sunday, when the much-fancied Amakhosi took on the Natal Rich Boys, in what should have been a comfortable win for the Glamour Boys, who boast a far superior squad.
According to Transfermarkt, Chiefs’ entire squad has a combined value of €11,23m (±R 201m) which is more than double the value of Richards Bay, whose squad has a combined market value of just €1,2m (±R21m).
To put the gulf between the two sides in context, Chiefs’ most valuable player, Khama Billiat, who was unavailable on the day due to injury, is worth more than the entire Richards Bay side put together!
The Zimbabwean has a market value of €1,5m (±R26m) which is R300k more than their coastal opponents.
Strikes from Austin Dube and Siyabonga Vilane all but diminished Chiefs’ hopes of silverware this season and Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt labelled their 2-1 defeat as embarrassing and the first of his 27-year career to a lower opposition team.
Chiefs will once again try to pick up the pieces and go in search of their former glory, while coach Simo Dladla and his men go marching into last 16 draw, set to take place on Monday.
