How Gamildien Dealt With Failed Chiefs Move

Swallows coach Brandon Truter admits he’s had to put his arm around striker Ruzaigh Gamildien after his move to Kaizer Chiefs fell through.

The Dube Birds top goal scorer last season was believed to be on his way to Naturena with a deal agreed to in principle and the player looking forward to playing for the Glamour Boys.

But Chiefs retracted the offer soon after Stuart Baxter’s arrival, with indications that there were now fresh doubts about whether the transfer was a viable option for the club in the first place.

Truter spoke openly about having to nurse Gamildien’s confidence, which took a bit of a knock after the deal did not happen.

“I think he was obviously disappointed. More than half of SA footballers, as youngsters, it is their dream to play for the likes of Kaizer Chiefs,” said Truter, who was speaking to journalists ahead of Swallows’ quarterfinal MTN8 fixture against Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

“I had to do some talking to, sit him down and get him to focus again. We had to look at the pros and cons of joining Chiefs. We had to remind him that here at Swallows he has some stability as well because of the performances he gave last season. He will have (Mwape) Musonda and (Kagiso) Malinga to push him as well, you can see the level of competition at training. They all want to start and play, and for the coaching staff, it’s a massive headache. But he is focused and there’s no time to be relaxed, he has to get on with it.”

In the end, Chiefs only signed Njabulo Ngcobo from Swallows, while Sifiso Hlanti and Kgaogelo Sekgota returned to Naturena after a year with the Dube Birds last season.
