Kaizer Chiefs’ Daniel Cardoso is ranked as one of the most expensive centre-backs in Mzansi, but how far away is the player from the top spot?
The 31-year-old has had an incredible season with Amakhosi so far this season, where he’s played every minute for Chiefs in all competitions.
The centre-back has been key in the Soweto giants’ run at the top of the league standings, fighting to put an end to Chiefs’ five-year trophy drought while also eyeing his first piece of competitive silverware at the club.
There is no doubt that Cardoso has established himself as one of Chiefs most valuable players at the club, but how does his value compare to the other top centre-backs in the country?
Cardoso joined Amakhosi from Free State Stars back in July 2015, where at the time the player’s market value rose to €250 000 (±R4.7m), this according to the figures on transfermarkt.com.
While his value did however take a slight drop thereafter, when he struggled for game-time in the 2015/16 campaign, Cardoso eventually cemented his spot in Amakhosi’s starting line-up in the 2017/18 season and subsequently saw his market value rise to €750 000 (±R14 million).
In February this year, during his best season with Amakhosi so far, the centre-back’s value rocketed to €900 000 (±R16.9 million), however, after the COVID-19 pandemic saw every player’s value decrease on the market, Cardoso is now at €725 000 (±R13.6 million).
As things stand, Cardoso is the third most expensive player at Amakhosi and the fourth most expensive centre-back in South Africa’s top-flight.
