Kaizer Chiefs will face-off with Chippa United this evening and Head Coach Gavin Hunt has issued an important update on the availability of players in the squad.
Chiefs had a disappointing start to their 2020/21 DStv campaign, suffering a devastating 3-0 loss to last season’s champions, Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday afternoon at the FNB Stadium.
But there was little time to lick their wounds, as they return to action tonight against the Chilli Boys.
“It is a matter of quick recovery on all fronts. We gave the team a break on Sunday and got back on Monday to prepare for tonight. There is actually no time to effect many changes in the team,” Hunt said on Chiefs’ official website.
“We pretty much travelled with the same squad that was in camp for the Sundowns game. We reviewed the Sundowns game and saw where we went wrong. As I mentioned, Chippa will bring a different dimension to the match. They will have their confidence high after opening with a draw away to Cape Town City. We will have to lift our game and try to dominate them from the first whistle. It is the second game of the season and it will not be easy to judge and make up how teams are set up at this stage.”
A positive for Amakhosi is that Daniel Akpeyi returns to the fold after his passport situation was resolved, however, Eric Mathoho and Samir Nurkovic remain on the sidelines.
“Daniel Akpeyi has travelled with the team. He is available for selection after recovering from injury and his passport renewal is also sorted. It is always good to have competition in the areas of the team.
“The match is going to be tough for both teams. We are continuing to get the team at the right point. It will take a matter of practice and more games before we get to where we want to be,” Hunt added.
