Chiefs Snubbed As Shabba Opens Fresh Talks…

Siphiwe Tshabalala, currently a free agent, could be playing in the Premier Soccer League again in the coming weeks, the Siya crew has been informed.

His dream move abroad, albeit quite late in his career, ended with a request by his Turkish club BB Erzurumspor to slash his salary in half after they were relegated from top-flight football.

But Siya sources have informed the crew that ‘Shabba’ is poised for a comeback in the PSL ahead of the 2020/21 season and could very well be considered for a short-term deal to finish the balance of the current campaign as clubs scramble for numbers.

Early indications were that Swallows FC was one of the clubs keen on the experienced veteran’s services and would be eager to get him on board if their quest for promotion to the Premiership is successful, but chairman David Mogashoa has played down the link.

‘Shabba’ has been unattached since August last year, which means he was in a position to sign for any club the moment Erzurumspor handed him his clearance 11 months ago.

His status also allows him to join any of the PSL clubs willing to table a short-term offer to complete the remaining rounds of this season, which will resume next weekend after it was halted by Covid-19 back in March.

Should he join any team in Mzansi, it is likely that any terms would then be assessed at a later stage given that the player is no spring chicken. He turns 36 next month.

According to Siya sources, Kaizer Chiefs, a club where Tshabalala spent more than a decade and won seven trophies, is not on the list of potential destinations, although there remains mutual respect and the player was even invited to Amakhosi’s 50th year celebration at FNB Stadium seven months ago.

A potential move back to Europe did not materialise in January because of Covid-19, the player told the SA Football Journalists’ Association recently.

‘Shabba’ said he had also just recovered from an injury that put his plans to bounce back last year on hold having left Turkey in August for a fresh start.
