A former Mamelodi Sundowns player has suggested that Kaizer Chiefs would be the deserving winners of the Absa Premiership title if the season was to end like this.
While the football fraternity is waiting on the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the PSL to make a decision about the resumption of the 2019/20 season, some have suggested that the team at the top of the log should be handed the title, as with some other leagues around the world.
Indications are that top-flight football in Mzansi could resume in August, although there has been no official confirmation from the authorities about the exact date.
The PSL has been suspended since mid-March, and according to ex-Sundowns striker Sandile Ndlovu, Chiefs would be the deserving winners of the title if the season doesn’t progress.
“This thing of no football that’s being played at the moment doesn’t start in the PSL, it starts down at the bottom from the SAB League to the ABC Motsepe League and upwards. It is chaotic. I think it would be best for Chiefs to be given the title. I mean, Chiefs have been at the top of the log for the better part of the season and they have done well,” Ndlovu told the Siya crew.
“I’m not saying I’m against Sundowns, because Sundowns is home to me as that is where I grew up and I love the club. But they haven’t been number one this season and there are no guarantees that they will win all their remaining matches. The same applies for Pirates, Wits and other teams – no one is guaranteed to win all their matches. But because Chiefs have been at the top from the beginning, they should just be handed the title. Everything else can then be decided regarding promotion of teams from the NFD (GladAfrica Championship) and things like that. I think it’s high time that we get to have 18 teams in the top-flight again,” he said.
