Kaizer Chiefs have identified another transfer target, this time in the lower division, the Siya crew has been informed.
With their FIFA transfer ban soon to be lifted in July, the Glamour Boys are believed to be working tirelessly behind the scenes to reinforce the squad next season as it’s expected there will be an overhaul of the current team.
According to Siya sources, one name that’s made it onto the club’s list of potential targets is that of Thendo Mukumela, the Cape Town Spurs junior international recently named in David Notoane’s 40-man preliminary squad for the Tokyo Olympics.
The midfielder is also a product of the Spurs youth academy (previously Ajax Cape Town) but was snapped up by Mamelodi Sundowns in 2015 with the expectation that he would be a regular in the senior team a few years down the line.
Although Mukumela has been part of the national teams from the U/17 level all the way to being on the Bafana Bafana radar during coach Stuart Baxter’s tenure, he did not make a single appearance for the Brazilians.
He joined Ajax, before it was renamed Spurs, at the start of the 2018/19 season in their bid to return to the top flight, having been relegated to the GladAfrica Championship, the second tier of South African football.
Indications are that Mukumela’s move to the Mother City was part of the deal that saw Grant Margeman and Jody February sign for Downs.
The Siya crew now understands that Amakhosi have been tracking him closely and with promotion to the DStv Premiership not possible for Spurs this season and relegation the most likely route, Mukumela could be easily available!
Once players drop to the ABC Motsepe League, the third tier, then they are classified as amateur unless the club makes a special provision to alter his status.
Usually, amateur players are as good as free agents, but it’s unlikely that Mukumela’s situation will be a simple as that.
