Chiefs Stalwart Keeps CAF CL Hopes Alive

Kaizer Chiefs kept their CAF Champions League hopes alive with victory over Sekhukhune United in their penultimate DStv Premiership clash of the season.

DStv Premiership

Result: Sekhukhune United 0-1 Kaizer Chiefs

Date: 14 May 2022

Venue: Emirates Airline Park

The Soweto giants were without the services of Keagan Dolly, Samir Nurkovic through suspension while Phathutshedzo Nange was suspended, as Sabelo Radebe and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo were recalled. Meanwhile, former Chiefs star Willard Katsande was only named on the Sekhukhune bench.

With both sides looking to finish the season on a hight, the game got off to a lively start as Daniel Cardoso saw volley sail inches wide of the upright before Bruce Bvuma was forced into a fine save by Molaba's header inside the opening 10 minutes.

The Soweto giants took control after the 20-minute mark but found it tough to break down a stubborn Sekhukhune defence, who thwarted their every attempt in and around the 18-yard area.

However, Chiefs got their reward on 38 minutes courtesy of a close-range header from Ramahlwe Mphahlele, who scored on his return to Ellis Park where he made his professional debut 15 years ago.

The visitors were able to see out a late push for Sekhukhune, who went closest with a header looping header from Charlton Mashumba just before the halftime break.

Chiefs are planning to reduce the average age of the squad, are these players safe?

Sekhukhune rang the changes in the second half as Mashumba and Molaba made way for Ohizu and Katsande, as the hosts looked to get themselves back in the contest.

Chiefs continued to threaten but were let down by their finishing as Khama Billiat was denied in a one-on-one situation before Sabelo Radebe headed straight at Toaster Nsabata a few minutes later at the far post.

The visitors were nearly made to pay for those misses when Sekhukhune substitute Prince Nxumalo latched onto a ball over the top, however, the striker headed wide with only Bvuma to beat on 70 minutes.

Arthur Zwane and Dillion Sheppard threw on Lazarous Kambole and Happy Mashiane in the final stages, and the former should have wrapped up the win minutes later but he was denied by Nsabata from close range.

The misses did not comeback to haunt Chiefs who held on for maximum points, which keeps their CAF hopes alive after both Cape Town City and Royal AM dropped points.
