Chiefs Extend Unbeaten Run Despite Dropping Points

DStv Premiership

Result: Kaizer Chiefs 1-1 Baroka

Date: 26 January 2021

Venue: FNB Stadium

Kaizer Chiefs extended their unbeaten in the DStv Premiership to five matches after coming from behind to draw 1-1 with Baroka on Tuesday evening.

Reeve Frosler earned his first league start since November 2020 for the Soweto giants, while Baroka recalled Oscarine Masuluke between the sticks, with Elvis Chipezeze dropping to the bench.

Manuel Kambala, who denied Chiefs the title on the last day of the season, was presented with a good chance to put Baroka ahead inside 10 minutes but he was unable to steer his header on target at the far post.

Chiefs, meanwhile, had to wait until the 23rd minute for an opening when Lebogang Manyama's cross found Frosler, who saw his first-time strike sail into the side-netting.

From thereon, Baroka began seeing a bit more of the ball but they were often let down by their decision-making in the final third as Daniel Akpeyi only had one save to make in the opening 45 minutes.

While Akpeyi did not have much to do in the first half, he was picking the ball out of his own net on 52 minutes when Thamsanqa Masiya opened the scoring for Baroka after latching onto Evidence Makgopa's flick-on.

Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt responded with a double change on the hour mark, with Erick Mathoho and Happy Mashiane making way for Leonardo Castro and Kearyn Baccus.

Castro nearly made his presence felt for the hosts in the Baroka box, but he was unable to steer home Nkosingiphile Ngcobo's teasing cross from the left flank with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Five minutes later, Chiefs were gifted the equaliser as Frosler did well to skip past Denwin Farmer before putting in a cross, which was deflected into an empty net by Goodman Mosele.

The hosts threw everything forward in search of a winning goal, but the Baroka defence along with Masuluke ensured the visitors walked away with a share of the spoils.
