Daniel Akpeyi returned from injury to take the place of Itumeleng Khune between the sticks for Chiefs, while youngsters Siyabonga Ngezana and Njabulo Blom were handed starts.

Chiefs almost took the lead in fortuitous circumstances in the 21st minute when Khama Billiat flashed the ball across the box from the right-hand side with Chippa defender Frederic Nsabiyumva stretching out his left leg to try and divert the ball away from danger but in doing so almost putting the ball in to the back of his own net.

Amakhosi looked like they were edging closer and closer to taking the lead with Castro hitting the bar soon afterwards. Billiat's delivery was flicked on to the back post before the ball was pinged back in to the box by Daniel Cardoso for the Colombian forward to head on to the bar from close range.

Gavin Hunt was shaking his head on the sideline a couple of minutes later wondering how his side were not in the lead when Lebogang Manyama hit the woodwork with a superb curling free-kick, while Billiat looked to have placed the ball inside the bottom right-hand corner, was denied by Mothwa who diverted the ball on to the upright with his fingertips.

In the 57th minute, Billiat played a delicate little ball through for Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, who just needed to control the ball with only the keeper to beat, but uncharacteristically his touch let him down.

Chiefs were making the Chilli Boys defence feel the heat and Mothwa produced three stunning saves back-to-back to keep the home side in the game. First, Manyama tested him at his near post, then Cardoso with a venomous long-range strike before an unmarked Castro's header was instinctively pushed away at close range.

Akpey had had nothing to do, with Chippa having not even registered a shot on target or won a corner. Ngcobo looked to make amends when he lined up a shot on his left foot but it was palmed away quite comfortably by Mothwa in the end.

The visitors finally and deservedly broke the deadlock with just over ten minutes to go when Manyamá whipped a cross in from the right-hand side with the ball bouncing off Chippa defender Damons' thigh and in to the back of the net for Chiefs' first league win of the season.
