Kaizer Chiefs had their supporters biting their fingernails on Saturday afternoon in the Telkom Knockout, and now you can relive their tense penalty shootout victory…
The Glamour Boys got a late equaliser through Samir Nurkovic as he levelled up against Cape Town City following Kermit Erasmus’ opener, with Erick Mathoho going on to score the winning penalty in the shootout after some heroics from Daniel Akpeyi.
Chiefs’ win made sure that they put their name into the hat for the next round of TKO fixtures as they chase the end of the longest trophy drought in the club’s history, and Ernst Middendorp will be delighted with their continued fine start to the 2019/20 season.
The Glamour Boys have now lost just one of nine games in all competitions so far this campaign, and now find themselves on a four-game winning streak – albeit with their latest victory not coming in normal time.
You can check out the goals, the drama and the celebrations in the video below, as well as the comments from both Middendorp and Benni McCarthy after the final penalty had been slotted home by ‘Tower’.
Chiefs will now wait for the TKO draw to find out whether it will be Orlando Pirates, Golden Arrows, Maritzburg United, SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns, Highlands Park or Chippa United/Bloemfontein Celtic that they face for a place in the semifinals.
