Chiefs Stopper On Thin Ice For Sundowns Clash

With Itumeleng Khune out injured, Ernst Middendorp will have his fingers crossed regarding another Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper as he remains on thin ice going into this weekend…
Daniel Akpeyi has already picked up three yellow cards this season for the Glamour Boys in 2019/20 – averaging a booking every other game – and is now just one yellow card away from a one-match suspension.
Chiefs took the decision to release the likes of Virgil Vries and Brylon Petersen at the end of last season, and with Khune out for at least the rest of the month, Middendorp will be keeping an eye on the likes of young Bontle Molefe in case he needs to be called upon.
Akpeyi appears to be Chiefs’ second-choice this season behind Khune having played six of their eight league games so far, and with Bruce Bvuma only having recently recovered from injury himself, a suspension for the Nigerian could be problematic for the Amakhosi.
The Glamour Boys take on Cape Town City in the Telkom Knockout this weekend as they look to take one step closer to ending their trophyless streak (the longest in their history), and Akpeyi will be aware of the fact that he was handed one of his three yellows in the league meeting between the teams back in August.
As was the case in the Shell Helix Ultra Cup this past weekend, Middendorp is expected to name Akpeyi in his starting XI v City with Bvuma on the bench, though will also be thinking about the impending encounter with title-challengers, Mamelodi Sundowns, on October 27.
Chiefs and the Citizens lock horns at 15h00 on Saturday as the duo look to book their spot in the next round of this year’s TKO, knocking out a potential rival along the way.
Would you play Akpeyi v City or save him for Sundowns?
