Could Itumeleng Khune overtake Daniel Akpeyi? Ernst Middendorp has given some insight into how he’ll make his decision on Kaizer Chiefs’ number one goalkeeper…

Khune made his long-awaited return to action over the weekend as he managed to keep a clean sheet against GladAfrica Championship side, Royal Eagles, with the shot-stopper making his first appearance since back in September.
Daniel Akpeyi has come on leaps and bounds in Amakhosi colours since joining from Chippa United, and few expected him to be keeping Khune on the bench at this point in the season, let alone with the Glamour Boys sitting on top of the Absa Premiership table.
Now, having given Khune a chance against Eagles in the Nedbank Cup, Middendorp says that he will chat to his technical team before making a decision on who will start against Maritzburg United this weekend as they return to league action on Saturday evening.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the German said, “We have good goalies... All of them qualified to do the job for us. Let’s hear what the technical team says, I will be guided by their advice. Akpeyi has done well for us, saving us in certain situations. Maybe Khune will be back in goals soon.”
Akpeyi has established himself as Chiefs’ number one over the past few months, putting in a number of impressive performances – and earning individual recognition for his form – so is expected to be back between the sticks against the Team of Choice this weekend.
