With Kaizer Chiefs confirming that George Maluleka will be leaving at the end of the season, and the club still having a transfer ban imposed on them, it may lead to an injection of youth…
The Glamour Boys are currently riding high at the top of the Absa Premiership table after an impressive 2019/20 campaign so far, but they were dealt a blow recently as they reported that ‘Mido’ had informed them that he has signed a precontract to join Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of the season.
Chiefs, meanwhile, are banned from signing any new players for the next two transfer windows after FIFA punished them for their signing of Andriamirado 'Dax' Andrianarimanana (they are in the process of appealing), so may have to look internally for Maluleka’s replacement.
It is thought that, should he keep up the required levels in training, the 31-year-old will remain in Ernst Middendorp’s plans until he leaves for Chloorkop, but the club will also want the German to keep an eye on who comes into his role next season.
Maluleka has played 19 of Chiefs’ 22 Absa Premiership games so far, playing a key role in their march to the top of the table, but who is waiting in the wings?
The exit of the midfield man could well open up a space for young Nkosingiphile Ngcobo to step up after his return from injury, while the likes of Kearyn Baccus, Anthony Akumu and Siphelele Ntshangase are all central midfielders vying for more gametime in 2020/21.
Middendorp has also suggested that Philani Zulu, a player who hasn’t seen much time on the field this season, could step into a central role if required, giving them another option to potentially call upon.
Chiefs fans, however, have seen what 20-year-old Ngcobo can do when called upon, and they’ll be itching to see the talented South African youth international get more time on the field as he aims to take over the ‘Mido’ role once next season gets underway.
