At least one Kaizer Chiefs player has had his contract status temporarily confirmed, the Siya crew has been told.
Bernard Parker will sign a short-term deal with the Glamour Boys until the end of July, at which stage the two parties will sit down to then map a way forward.
“Obviously his contract expires at the end of June, and he’s not the only one. But we will do an extension on the basis that he’s got to have a contract in place to be able to feature in the Champions League final,” his agent Mike Makaab told the Siya crew.
“I think it is only after that that we can look forward because I think Chiefs will focus their entire energy on preparation, which is understandable. And then we will sit down and discuss Bernard’s future going forward, but I am confident that his future does lie with Chiefs.”
There are about nine other players whose contract status has not yet been communicated by the club, although a few – like Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Itumeleng Khune and Khama Billiat – have options which are expected to be triggered.
Chiefs, having qualified for the final of the Champions League against Al Ahly on July 17, still want to keep a full roster of the registered players, and to do that all of them must still have valid contracts, by law and for insurance purposes.
Parker has now had his secured, albeit temporarily, with a final decision now only expected at the end of July or immediately after the match in Morocco.
