Chiefs’ Latest Hot Prospect Opens Up

His introduction to top-flight football was stalled by a long term injury that also kept him out of the 2019 youth World Cup, but one of Kaizer Chiefs’ latest hot prospects has now reacted to his most recent recovery.

Nkosingiphile Ngcobo made his Amakhosi debut in March last year, coming off the bench to replace Khama Billiat in their narrow 1-0 win over Maritzburg United at the FNB Stadium and he’d hoped to kick on from there.

But a nasty Achilles tendon rapture dashed his hopes of making further progress under coach Ernst Middendorp, who had praised him and hailed him as the club’s future having been promoted from their Multichoice Diski Challenge team.

The injury also meant that Ngcobo, now 20, would miss the FIFA World Cup for his age group in Poland later that same year.

He returned after nine months, ironically against the same team he made his debut against, managing 11 minutes in the draw against the Team of Choice at the same venue where he’d first featured for the Glamour Boys.

“I can’t forget making a return to the first team after almost a year’s absence,” Ngcobo was quoted as saying on the club’s official website.

“The game against Maritzburg was very difficult but I enjoyed it. The stadium was full, and the atmosphere was great. I was very happy to return and play in that game.”

Since then, the youngster has also been picked by u-23 coach David Notoane for the Olympics, which have subsequently been moved to next year due to the Coronavirus pandemic that has disrupted the lives and the world of sport.

“I was very happy to make the preliminary Olympics squad,” the midfielder said. “I was working hard for that, and it happened, so I just need to continue working harder.”

On football being halted he added: “We miss the Amakhosi faithful, but we will be back soon. The supporters must stay home and safe. We love them so much and can’t wait to see them after we have gone past this moment.”
