The Siya crew understands that Kaizer Chiefs are now outright favourites to sign one of this season’s stand out players, beating Mamelodi Sundowns to the punch.
Swallows defender Njabulo Ngcobo is a target for both clubs to join them next season and it was Amakhosi who initially opened talks with the Dube Birds for his signature while their rivals, Downs were watching closely.
When the Brazilians did make their move it appeared to be too late, with the Siya crew informed that should the centreback leave Swallows, his destination is then likely to be Naturena and not Chloorkop next season.
Chiefs are understood to have opened informal talks quite early in trying to get Swallows to agree to sell the 26-year-old.
The Siya crew first reported their interest in February.
With their FIFA ban set to be lifted in July, the Glamour Boys have to move quickly to secure transfer targets – it’s expected that several players will be leaving Chiefs with their contracts up for renewal, while some are surplus to requirements.
Downs aren’t desperate for a centreback, but indications are that the club wants to bring in a prospect with big potential to be an understudy to some of their senior defenders like Ricardo Nascimento and Mosa Lebusa.
But it now looks as though they will have to search elsewhere with Siya sources informing the crew that Amakhosi are now outright favourites to sign Ngcobo.
Chiefs have also already all but agreed to sign Swallows striker Ruzaigh Gamildien.
