Two Players Sent Off As Chiefs Clinch Vital CCL Win

CAF Champions League

Result: Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 Wydad Casablanca

Date: 03 April 2021

Venue: FNB Stadium

Kaizer Chiefs kept their hopes of qualifying for the CAF Champions League quarter-finals alive with a 1-0 win over Wydad Casablanca.

Chiefs made two changes from their win over Orlando Pirates, as Yagan Sasman got a rare start alongside the return of Lebogang Manyama while Khama Billiat, Leonardo Castro and shot-stopper Itumeleng Khune were named on the bench.

Amakhosi were forceful in the early exchanges and Bernard Parker came close to giving them the lead in the 17th minute with an acrobatic strike that missed wide.

Gavin Hunt's charges were holding Wydad around their own box but played into their hands with long crosses that were dealt with comfortably at the back.

The Moroccan side were getting out of their defensive shell towards the end of the first stanza, which saw Chiefs reduced to ten men five minutes before the break after goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi was shown a straight red card for handling the ball outside the box.

Manyama was sacrificed for Khune to come on in place of the Nigerian, as the first stanza ended goalless at FNB Stadium.

Chiefs enjoyed a perfect start to the second stanza after Parker gave them the lead three minutes from the break with a header inside the box after a quick counter-attack.

Wydad put Amakhosi under pressure thereafter, as Amine Farhane came close to snatching the equaliser with a towering header inside the box that sailed slightly over the bar.

Hunt's troops were defending in numbers in the closing minutes but they had to play the final few minutes with nine men after Samir Nurkovic got a second booking in the last minute of regulation time.

In the end, Chiefs held on to claim a crucial victory but they remain in third place, equal on points with second-placed Horoya, who they face next week for a spot in the quarter-finals.

Here's how they started:

Chiefs: Akpeyi, Frosler, Sasman, Cardoso, Ngezana, Blom, Ngcobo, Mashiane, Manyama, Parker, Nurkovic.

Subs: Khune, Mphahlele, Baccus, Kambole, Castro, Katsande, Billiat.
