Gavin Hunt has confirmed that he will be without two players for his first official match as Kaizer Chiefs coach on Sunday.
Amakhosi host Maritzburg United in the quarterfinals of the MTN8 at FNB Stadium and Hunt, who was appointed last month, said he would be without strikers Samir Nurkovic and Leonardo Castro for the crucial fixture.
The Siya crew reported on September 11 that Nurkovic was expected to miss at least two months of action having played with pain-reducing injections to complete the balance of the previous season while Ernst Middendorp was still the coach.
He finished as Chiefs’ top goalscorer in his debut season.
Castro suffered an injury while in the bio-bubble and was allowed to leave camp with four games to go to conclude the campaign.
“I came here and a lot of these players have been injured. Samir, the top goalscorer, has been injured and he won’t play,” Hunt told the media.
“He’s had an operation, hasn’t trained a single day and I think he will be out for some time. Castro was obviously also injured before the end of the season. He also hasn’t trained much. I think those are the two major injuries.”
Hunt said it was his job as the coach to find solutions.
“They were the cornerstone of the team last year and had done very well. That is a problem going forward – but we will have to realign ourselves and reshape to play to the strengths of the players that we’ve got, that’s important and I will try and do that,” he said.
