Kaizer Chiefs are believed to have signed a player who has long been admired by coach Stuart Baxter during his first spell at the club.
According to sources at Naturena, midfielder Cole Alexander is expected to leave Indian Premier League outfit Odisha FC to join the Glamour Boys and finally reunite with Baxter at the Soweto club next season.
The two worked together briefly in India, where Baxter was head coach of Odisha before he was sacked earlier this year for comments made in a TV interview.
Alexander, who had signed a two-year contract in October, remained behind to finish off the campaign, though he’d recently returned home following the birth of his child – but the spike in Covid-19 cases, however, meant he had not yet made it back to India.
Kick-Off.com reported last week that the 32-year-old had been locked in talks with Odisha over an amicable solution that would ensure he remains in SA to be closer to his family, especially during the global pandemic.
It appears as though the two parties have finally come to a mutual agreement to terminate his contract and issue him a clearance, making him a free agent.
That’s opened the door for Alexander to reunite with Baxter, who has been a fan of his from his days at Polokwane City as far back as 2014.
Baxter also coached the midfielder at SuperSport United for a short period and also occasionally called him up while he was Bafana Bafana coach later.
Chiefs are expected to confirm his signing in the coming days, adding him to the seven players (see gallery above) they have already announced since their FIFA ban was lifted.
