Stuart Baxter is racing against time to get two players back in the squad ahead of Kaizer Chiefs’ trip to Swallows on Sunday.
The Englishman confirmed this week after Amakhosi were held to a 1-1 draw by AmaZulu at FNB Stadium in their DStv Premiership clash that attacker Khama Billiat had taken ill on the eve of the match and missed out.
And his absence was noticeable, with the poor finishing upfront leaving Baxter frustrated at the performance when it looked like Chiefs were gaining momentum in trying to reduce the gap at the top of the log standings.
It’s understood Billiat remains a doubt for Sunday’s clash, but given that there’s still two full days before the encounter, the technical team is hopeful.
But the Siya crew has been told that Leonardo Castro, on the other hand, is expected to miss the Swallows match having also taken ill.
This is a blow not only for the club, but for the Colombian as well after he returned to action last weekend away at Maritzburg United – making his first appearance for the club this season following his long recovery from a glute tear.
Castro got a four-minute cameo this past Sunday at the Harry Gwala Stadium and Baxter told the media afterwards that he was planning to gradually introduce the player back until he is fully fit to start.
The striker had been out for nearly five months.
Baxter is hoping to have Billiat back to strengthen the Chiefs front line, which looked toothless and lacking of ideas against AmaZulu.
