Baxter: Why We Decided To Keep Khune At Chiefs!

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Stuart Baxter has delved into the club’s thinking behind handing long-serving goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune a contract extension, despite him not being at his best in recent times.

Earlier this week, Chiefs announced that Khune as well as Lebogang Manyama, Khama Billiat, Bernard Parker and Ramahlwe Mphahlele have all been handed extensions.

Khune will be at Chiefs for another two seasons.

There were a few question marks over Khune, who by his high standards, has not been at his best for the Glamour Boys, which has opened up the door for the likes of Daniel Akpeyi and Bruce Bvuma to stake a claim for the number one jersey at Amakhosi.

Speaking to the media ahead of the Carling Black Label Cup this weekend, Baxter opened up on why the club took the decision to retain the longest serving member of the current squad.

“Itu has had an absolutely amazing career so far. I don't think that is at an end in any way shape or form,” Baxter told journalists.

“What he has shown in the last couple of seasons is when he is injured, he’s still good to have around the place. If he is sitting on the bench, he is still good to have around the place. If it is solely for on the training field where he has an infectious enthusiasm, he's good to have around the place and I am sure if that was not the case, he probably wouldn't be getting an extension.

“I think he's got every chance of playing lots of games this year and whether Itu carries on and has two more seasons or three I think it will be very much up to Itu because the South African players would like to have him in there and the staff. We are very, very pleased to have Itu at Kaizer Chiefs,” he added.

Khune meanwhile, expressed his gratitude for another opportunity at Naturena, while revealing that he is uncertain whether it his last contract with his boyhood club or not.
