Stuart Baxter has made an admission about Kaizer Chiefs’ form now that his side has ended the four-game winless run.
Amakhosi thrashed Chippa United 4-0 at the weekend to move into the Top 8 bracket of the DStv Premiership, having endured some heavy criticism, with some of the supporters even calling for Baxter’s sacking.
But there was immediate euphoria on Saturday night following the emphatic win, which is not unusual given the fickle nature of football fans.
However, Baxter has called for “focus” ahead of yet another tough fixture on Sunday when Chiefs travel to SuperSport United, who are currently in second place behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns on the table.
“We feel we have been playing better than what our results have been giving us, but we have not been clinical in front of goal. We have given up easy chances at the wrong time and had to chase the games,” Baxter told the media.
“We have been working on our attacking play, our defending and our pressing shape – when it comes together and we win 4-0, you can forget what we actually said. We said the players must stay focused on their performance and not people that want to bring you down, or complain or those that demand things from you. It’s the same now, we should remain focused on performing and not getting wrapped up in the elation and people patting us on the back now.”
Itumeleng Khune had a special message on Chiefs chairman's birthday...
Baxter, who took over from Gavin Hunt in June and did not have sufficient pre-season time because of Chiefs’ involvement in the CAF Champions League, argued that the poor results had overshadowed the good work behind the scenes.
“The truth is we weren’t as bad when they were saying we were bad, and we aren’t as good as they saying we are now,” the Englishman said.
“My job is to make sure we focus on the here and now, we have a difficult game coming up (against SSU) and we’ve got to prepare tactically for that. It may not be the same tactical game, but we have to concentrate on the performance.”
