Stuart Baxter has explained the six changes he made in Kaizer Chiefs' 3-1 win over Swallows FC on Sunday, although two of them were not a surprise.
Going into the DStv Premiership clash at the Dobsonville Stadium, it had already been confirmed that right back Njabulo Blom and midfielder Cole Alexander would be unavailable as both were serving suspension.
But when the Amakhosi line-up came out, Baxter had added four more fresh faces to the starting line-up and hoped for a reaction after blasting the side for a lacklustre display a few days earlier against AmaZulu at FNB Stadium.
“With these three games we’ve had in a very short time, the loading on the players is enormous and we were conscious of that fact,” the coach told the club’s media department when asked about handing starts to players like Kearyn Baccus and Happy Mashiane.
“We also tried to ease the load at the finish by putting some of the other lads on and I thought Kearyn was excellent in his role. (Siphosakhe) Ntiya-Ntiya came on and had a very good little cameo – so it was good.”
Chiefs now prepare to host Cape Town City on Saturday in another tough test for Baxter’s men as they attempt to close the gap on log leaders Sundowns.
Will Baxter change things again?
“It’s one of those, now the lads that you think are the starters have got to make sure they are up for it now because they’ve got others breathing down their necks, which gives me a good problem,” the coach explained.
