Stuart Baxter has spoken about the amount of effort Keagan Dolly has had to put in, to finally produce the masterclass he did on Saturday for Kaizer Chiefs.
Dolly, 28, scored two and assisted one more in Amakhosi’s 4-0 rout of Chippa United in their DStv Premiership win at the weekend.
Unsurprisingly, he was the Man of the Match.
Baxter had said before following Dolly’s arrival at Naturena as a marquee signing that he would not rush him to play, given his physical condition.
“He’s worked hard. I can’t take the responsibility – from the coach comes inspiration, but from the player comes motivation. And if you give him a plan, he sticks to it,” the Englishman told journalists after the match.
Chiefs got the Dolly deal over the line a few months after the ex-Mamelodi Sundowns star became a free agent at the end of his Montpellier contract in France.
“He hadn’t played for so long, and I am sure you understand that when you are out of the team and not part of the set-up, not playing – you lose your motivation and maybe you lose a little bit of that drive that keeps you in top shape,” added Baxter.
“By the time he came to us, yes, he was a few kilos overweight and needed to work on that. I did not want to just shove him in. The touch doesn’t go, the vision doesn’t go, the left foot doesn’t go. So, you are tempted to throw him in, but we have matched him pretty carefully up to where he is today. Now he is in good shape and he is enjoying football.”
The coach will be hoping Dolly carries that momentum for their away clash to SuperSport United on Sunday at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
