Which Chiefs Players Need To Retire?

Yesterday we saw Siyabonga Sangweni bid farewell to the game he dedicated his life to. Even though he was forced into retirement by injuries, I feel it was a right and wise decision.

At the age of 34, Siya was always considered to be past his best by pundits and critics alike. We all know that in South Africa, once you hit the 30 mark it's almost over for you. And by retiring, Sangweni has laid a foundation.

I know Ntsimbi isn't the first player to hang up his boots at the age of 34 or less, there have been a couple of players before him. But I guess it's for the first time we had so many players in our football at the wrong side of 30, especially at Kaizer Chiefs.

A number of players at Chiefs are over 30, hence fans dubbing Naturena as a retirement village. Ntsimbi has set the bar, and surely Amakhosi faithful are expecting some of their players to follow Siya. Morgan Gould is one player who has had his fair share of injuries, and since coming to Naturena in 2012, he has spent more time in rehab than in the field. At 33, many feels it's a little too late for him to get back to his best.

We've seen Jimmy Jambo give in to injuries at 26, why shouldn't Gould? One saying goes that footballers should consider retiring while fans still want to see them, and it holds true as we saw with Benni McCarthy, and now Ntsimbi. Maybe Siphiwe Tshabalala is in the right position to call it a day. At 32, Shabba is still a fan favourite, but many feels he no longer has anything to offer Chiefs.

Reneilwe Letsholonyane (34), Siboniso Gaxa (32) Bernard Parker (30) and Tsepo Masilela (31) are also some of the players that fans think they should ship out. It's not ideal for once a great player to be booed into retirement. We all know how Siyabonga Nkosi was pushed into retirement. Surely that's not the type of farewell the abovementioned players want, not after serving the game with flying colours.
