The World Cup is upon us and as it arrives we reflect on precedent tournaments. In the past, we have seen players who stood out at World Cups and often went on to become legends of the game.
At the 1986 World Cup we saw how the iconic Diego Maradona single handledy won the World Cup for Argentina, who could forget the “hand of God” goal scored against England in the quarterfinals.
During the 1998 World Cup, the Brazilian Ronaldo rose to prominence and his four goals helped Brazil reach the final. He missed the final due to an injury but his efforts will never be forgotten.
Here at home, in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, players like Wesley Sneijder and Andres Iniesta were pivotal to their team’s success, helping the Netherlands and Spain reach the finals respectively. Iniesta then became the hero for Spain, scoring the winner in extra time.
