Steve Khomphela is a very tactically astute coach and without a doubt one of the brightest coaches in the PSL. Taking over from the Stuart Baxter was never going to be easy, considering the fact that Kaizer Chiefs won the league so convincingly last season...
But sunday's Caf Champions league exit means that, barring an implosion of epic proportions by Sundowns, Chiefs will end the season with no silverware.
The most worrying thing for me is not the fact that Kaizer Chiefs are going to finish the season with an empty trophy cabinet, but the fact that there seems to be absolutely no signs of progress with this current Chiefs squad under Khomphela. In terms of style and patterns of play, what is Steve Khomphela trying to do with the Amakhosi? There isn't a clear, distinct style that they have developed under his tutelage.
There are obviously other mitigating factors to consider such as the fact that this is Khomphela's first season, He is working with an ageing squad he inherited from Stuart Baxter. But still there should at least be a semblance or trace of what he is trying to do in terms of philosophy, something to give us hope heading into the next season and that is what troubles me, there seems to be no progression for chiefs under Khomphela.
