Steve Komphela’s days are seemingly numbered at Chiefs, pending a review of the team and coach’s performances.
It looks certain that the results will indicate the perceived failure of the coach to deploy a tactical and technical approach to win matches. The team has lost several points with draws and last minute goals that have severely affected the ability of the team to win a trophy.
In recent years, Chiefs have been criticised for their incapacity and ability to acquire quality players that are fit to wear the famous black and gold jersey. The apparent lack of quality from the playing staff and the technical team is a massive challenge that the chairman and board of chiefs must address if they want to compete for championships. Komphela has shown himself up and is out of depth at this level of competition. Sometimes he takes a negative approach to games, with one example being the away league game against Mamelodi Sundowns, where he packed the team with defenders, which is against the tradition of the team.
The team now need to look at the highly technical and tactical coaches like Gavin Hunt and Luc Eymael, who are more experienced and brave enough to make unpopular decisions that benefit the team. Hunt has just won a double, whereas Luc is known for his offensive approach and his teams are always playing an enterprising football, with Polokwane City being case in point.
As much as Chiefs lack quality players, a mastermind coach is needed overshadow the lack of quality.
