Chiefs have experienced a tough campaign as they failed to defend their Absa Premiership title whilst also losing out on two finals, the MTN8 to Ajax Cape Town and the TKO to the current log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
Amakhosi are trailing to Sundowns with a massive 13 points and 7 games to go, making it highly improbable for them to catch up with Sundowns, who are in fine form, but also suffered a 1-0 home defeat to ASEC Mimosas in the CCL. Their chances seem quite unlikely in the competition.
With the frequently used squad showing no signs of hunger in winning matches after losing 4 consecutive matches , this could be the right time for Steve Komphela to try new permutations and bring in players who've seen less game time. They can give them the chance to show what they can offer. Not losing focusing on remaining in the top four, Komphela should try and prepare for the next season with the remaining games and try to build a new team that will compete for trophies when the following season starts, because the current players are not showing any improvement.
With no pressure on Amakhosi, I think it is the right time for the team to make some changes in the squad as the current players' form is deteriorating towards the end of the season, and at least this would count as one massive achievement for Chiefs. Building a new team for the upcoming season rather than focusing on players who are not showing signs of improvement will be good for the club.
Should chiefs start building now?
