It came as a shock when I first heard of Orlando Pirates coach's resignation. If there is one coach who I think should resign if his employers can't terminate his contract is Middendorp. He may have won his first two games of the season but like Steve Komphela said "Statistics are like a bikini they don't reveal everything." He won both games but not in a convincing manner.
Pirates have won their first game of the season with a 3-1 score. I may have not watched the game but this sounds convincing to me. Prior to that they beat Chiefs in a Beer cup, their arch rival. They lost first leg of their Caf by a goal to nil. It was an away game, so they can still beat this team in South Africa and advance to the next stage. We know Pirates are capable. Then they lost to Supersport United 3 nil. Embarrassing yes, but we know SSU is their worst nightmare. Besides SSU is not a small team where a big fuss could be made out of the outcomes of the game.
So did Micho resign because of these two loses? It was just a second game of the season, and the Caf game is not really lost, they can still overturn things. They did not start nicely too last season but ended on a very high note. They lost the league to Sundowns on the last day of the season. Had they won against Cape Town City we could be talking a different story now.So Micho's resignation leave us with more questions than answers.
There has always been rumors of Pirates management intervening with their coaches responsibilities. We don't know what the truth is. It has always been alleged that Floyd Mele and Screamer Tshabalala are the real coaches of Pirates. We don't know what the truth is.
A couple of times, I can recall 3 incidents where we saw Rhulani Mokoena, the assistant coach "over ruling" the head coach's instructions to players. One time he was seen running from the bench to stop Micho from making a substitution. It was awkward. He was asked who, between him and Rhulani, is in charge. He gave us some brotherhood relationship story.
Oh well we all believed that all is well and indeed they are working well as the coaching team. And then all of a sudden from being twins then they became triplets with addition of another coach, Fadlu David's. Now they are three on the bench. Now you wonder if Micho asked for Fadlu's addition or management thought he was the missing link. We don't know.
My bet is Micho was not as happy as he wanted us to believe. The guy was just doing honoring his contract. Can you have Gavin Hunt and Cavin Johnson on the same bench and expect them to work in peace. Zamalek came knocking because they know he is good coach. He told us he is happy at Pirates and he is not leaving. Few days later he resigns and then people say he got a better offer. I don't buy the story unless the offer we are talking about is him being in full control of the team.
Adios Micho... You are a good coach. Hope you come back one day. To coach Chiefs of course.
