Over the past few seasons, Maritzburg United have broken the hearts of so many clubs by either spoiling their title hopes or confirming their relegation.
In the 2010/2011 season, the Team of Choice spoiled the party for Ajax Cape Town on the last day of the Absa premiership season. Ajax were joint at the top of the table with Orlando Pirates, with only goal difference separating the two sides.
The likes of Thulani Serero, George Maluleke, Thulani Hlatshwayo and Sameehg Doutie were brutally heartbroken, with no mercy, when Diyo Sibisi’s and Gert Schalkwyk’s goals gave the Pietermaritzburg-based side a 2-2 draw to ruin any Ajax's title hopes.
Last season, they put the last nail in Jomo Cosmos’ coffin, ruining any PSL survival hopes when Evans Rusike’s brace sent Ezenkosi straight to automatic relegation. And, in this current PSL season, again the Team of Choice were responsible for ruining Cape Town City's title chase when Kurt Lentjies’ spectacular free kick kept Eric Tinkler’s troop's out of the title race.
Then in last night’s Absa premiership match, Maritzburg United once again found themselves standing in Mamelodi Sundowns way of defending their PSL championship, after holding them to a 2-2 draw. In that way, they did Bidvest Wits a huge favour by allowing them to come away with this season’s PSL title.
