Kaizer Chiefs is a club that is all about winning trophies, until two seasons ago, when Kaizer Motaung decided to take Stuart Baxter's recommendation and hire a coach who has never won anything in his career.
Steve Komphela deserves credit. As a player and former Bafana Bafana captain, he played abroad and came back to coach the likes of Free State Stars and Maritzburg United. He has been Bafana assistant coach and coached the national U23s. But, as a coach, Komphela must be the luckiest man in South African football to get the Kaizer Chiefs job.
As a coach, he has never won anything prior to his move to Amakhosi. He was used to surviving relegation and fighting for the top eight with his previous clubs.
Looking at the past season Chiefs have been very bad by their standards. Only Itumeleng Khune, Willard Katsande, Lorenzo Gordinho, Siphiwe Tshabalala, and maybe Joseph Molangoane deserve to be playing for Chiefs. As a matter of winning trophies, if there were nine Tshabalalas in the line-up, Chiefs would be winning everything!
Is Steve Komphela lucky to be Chiefs’ coach?
